For more than fifteen years, I worked behind the bar in restaurants, pubs, and nightclubs where the music was deafening, the drinks were strong, and good judgment rarely survived past midnight.
I saw things most people wouldn’t believe—and several things I still wish I could unsee.
There were jealous spouses, spectacular bar-top wipeouts, rooftop shooters, bachelorette parties gone feral, bartenders playing with fire (including myself), rookies requesting the “strongest drink possible,” and one memorable Friday night involving tear gas and a fake Gucci bag.
And that barely scratches the sticky surface.
Behind every bar is a world the customers never fully see. Bartenders have their own language, their own rules, and a code that keeps the whole beautifully dysfunctional machine running. We know who the best tippers are, which customers mean trouble, and why the person loudly promising to “take care of you” usually a buck and smirk.
We witness first dates, last dates, marriage proposals, affairs, fistfights, pour decisions, and occasionally all six before closing time.
These are the stories behind AJ Confidential.
Some will be funny. Some will be outrageous. Others will show the darker side of nightlife—the rivalries, danger, desperation, and consequences hiding beneath the flashing lights.
They’re also part of the world that inspired my debut novel, Pour Judgement Vol. 1.
The characters and story of Pour Judgement are 90%, half-fictional (wink). Their personalities, habits, schemes, and spectacularly bad decisions were shaped by years spent watching people reveal who they truly were after a few drinks and long after common sense had left the building.
I call it my autobarography.
The names have been changed to protect the guilty, a few details have been rearranged to protect the legally cautious, and some stories may sound too ridiculous to be true.
Those are usually the truest ones.
So pull up a stool and go behind the bar with me. I’ll introduce you to unforgettable characters, share the stories that inspired Pour Judgement, and reveal what really happens after the doors open, the lights dim, and respectable people begin making questionable choices.
